The attacks continue against Sarah Palin. Not even a week ago, I watched as thousands cheered the approaching bus, Straight Talk Express, carrying Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, to a rally in Ocala, FL.
Today, as I predicted, the McCain campaign has thrown Sarah under that same bus. As I mentioned the other day, Newsweek listed the Palin selection as the number one mistake McCain made. Yesterday, Carl Cameron from the “fair and balanced” FOX News Network, couldn’t contain himself as he excitedly quoted “unnamed sources” in the McCain campaign saying Palin lacked “a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate.” Yes, this is the same Carl Cameron who, the weekend before the 2000 election, decided to break the story of a DUI Bush received 16 years previous. It didn’t matter that GWB had given up drinking primarily as a result of that, the 16 year old story was an election eve hit piece designed to head the weekend news cycle. Thank you FOX News.
It is my belief that Sarah Palin is the key to the future of the Republican Party. She espouses the cultural and social values and ideas that americans are looking for. For this reason, the media elites, the “old republican establishment,” and yes, the democrats, must derail this threat now. Why else would they bother with these baseless attacks?
Now I heard reports on the local radio station this morning, that the republican party has dispatched a team to Alaska to take back the clothes they bought for Palin and her family. You remember the clothes they made the palins wear so they could look, “more sophisticated.” Now if this is true, it is the lowest form of callousness I have ever seen. I suppose after they take the clothes, they will auction them on Ebay.
Sarah Palin was the spark that helped McCain get as close as he did. That cannot be more clear. From the moment she was named, McCain’s poll numbers went up, passing Obama by 8 points after the convention. It was McCain’s campaign strategists that mismanaged this valuable asset, setting her up for attack. Then they have the audacity to blame her!
When Sarah Palin returned to Anchorage late Wednesday night, she held a press conference. Her response to these attacks was, “It’s politics. … It’s rough and tumble and you’ve got to have thick skin just like I’ve got.”
Perhaps John McCain should have made it a prerequisite for his campaign staff to read his book, Character is Destiny: Inspiring Stories Every Young Person Should Know and Every Adult Should Remember.” John McCain should do what he has always claimed to do, defend the innocent. Mr. McCain, get out there and repudiate these vicious attacks and defend the one who kept you from being a total failure. It’s time to get Sarah out from under the Straight Talk Express and throw your campaign staff and perhaps yourself under it once and for all.
